Announcement of the India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership (CEP)

Japan and India announced the " India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership (CEP)" on March 19, 2022, coinciding with Prime Minister Kishida's visit to India.

The Partnership aims to promote energy cooperation between Japan and India through diverse and realistic energy transitions utilizing all energy sources and technologies to ensure energy security, carbon neutrality and economic growth.

The bilateral energy cooperation areas that have been addressed under the Japan-India Energy Policy Dialogue will be expanded to include the following 11 areas, including clean energy. In addition to the exchange of information between the governments, public-private workshops will be held to discuss the initiatives of both countries, including R&D and human resource development.

Specific areas of cooperation

  • Electric Vehicles (EV), storage systems including batteries, electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI)
  • Energy Conservation in Buildings and Industries, Energy Efficient Appliances
  • Development of Solar Energy including Solar PV cells
  • Wind Energy
  • Clean, including Green Hydrogen
  • Clean, including Green Ammonia
  • Greater and cleaner use of LNG
  • Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS)/Carbon Recycling
  • Emerging fuels including Biofuels, CBG
  • Strategic Petroleum Reserves
  • Clean coal technology

*Not limited to the above, but will be discussed extensively in the future, depending on the interests of both countries and other factors.
