Joint Statement on Japan-United States Strategic Energy Partnership Meeting

The text of the following statement was released by the Governments of the United States of America and Japan.

At the meeting of the Japan-United States Strategic Energy Partnership (JUSEP) in Washington, D.C. on January 24, 2020, the United States and Japan reaffirmed their joint commitment to establishing a secure, open, and competitive energy market and strengthening energy security in the Indo-Pacific region. The two sides agreed on the importance of private sector participation in realizing this shared vision, and the need for greater focus in creating business opportunities for U.S. and Japanese energy companies. The two countries also highlighted the importance of further expanding capacity-building programs for the development of high-quality infrastructure and materializing projects in third countries that reflect their needs and existing initiatives, such as the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. The United States and Japan shared the recognition that fossil fuels, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and energy efficiency all play important roles in the global energy system. The two countries discussed ways to strengthen their collaboration with other partners in the region such as developing an integrated power grid in the Mekong region through the Japan-United States Mekong Power Partnership (JUMPP) and coordinating on electricity transmission line development in sub-Saharan Africa through Power Africa. The two countries also decided to hold a public-private event in a third country this year, demonstrating the Partnership’s renewed commitment to commercial engagement.
